This has been covered in the comic already. Basically, the denizens of the PATH system can be born as seeds, basically they hitchhike and very slightly influence the basic parameters of those who are born in the real world (without memories), and when they die, the memories get sent back to the host mind. He’s not a shade, he’s alive and well in the PATH system. In fact, he’s at least a million years old.
That second panel.. Is exactly how I’d imagine her to look at someone who she knew she killed, but was somehow talking to her anyway. Like seeing a ghost.
Especially given the severity of the trauma that killing him caused. She’s got to be feeling a lot of emotions right now, of all sorts.. Regret, shame, uncertainty, some anger and hatred still, sadness, loss, remorse, sorrow… Some happiness seeing him, but probably just fleeting, realizing that he most certainly is dead.
It speaks volumes that Fen hasn’t said a word on this page, when just a few pages ago she was almost starting to ramble about her own ideas for battle tactics, and then started berating LARS. Now she’s in shock.
I mean.. This is Piris. I imagine he’s eventually going to say some random insensitive thing that comes to his mind, without thinking about whether he should.
We do, after all, still need to see Fen practice her void form. And I think it’d do her a ton of good for the person she killed with it before, to actually tell her that it’s okay for her to use it on him – especially in this virtual environment. She probably blames herself for what happened way more than she should.
… What I do want to know is if Baren is in there, or if he’s still alive.
So with this new information about how the PATH works, I only have one question, is there any connection between Vix and Fen’s adopted mother?

I noticed this too! I think it’s on purpose; a lot of time has passed, and the whole time she’s been training and getting stronger.
It’s a subtle detail that’s really neat to notice.
