As long as it’s not too frequent, it can interrupt the story when convenient. Just don’t do a 5 page scene for a side character that won’t ever be seen again. That’s the one thing that always bothered me in a lot of comics. We get this 10 page back story for a side character that dies 2 pages later. In comics like this one, it’s a 10 page porn scene for a character that just up and disappears never to be seen again (like the drakkin in the early chapters).
